Healthy Homemade Cracker Jacks

Who doesn’t love Cracker Jacks?  But they are the WORST snack food you could possibly eat!

Sweetened with GMO corn syrup and cooked in GMO soybean oil with most likely GMO sugar and molasses made from GMO sugar and then there’s peanuts…which are contaminated with aphlatoxin mold.  Kettle Corn, unless it is organic, NON GMO is the same!

We don’t make Healthy Homemade Cracker Jacks very often; but it is fun every once in awhile to have a decadent treat…this one is a great substitute your kids will love and enjoy making.  I’d say this is good for a few times a year but not every week.

This was a real hit at our Whole Foods Market cooking class.  Microwave popcorn is extremely harmful to your health, the fumes alone are known to cause lung cancer.  Make your own in minutes.

One question came up at our class:  “Is Organic Popcorn genetically modified?”  According to the popcorn board, no popcorn is genetically modifed at this time.

Healthy Homemade Cracker Jacks

A healthier version of an American classic treat, Healthy Home Made Cracker Jacks is made with NON GMO popcorn, sweetened with raw local honey. Pop your corn in coconut oil for an extra flavor burst!


Homemade Popcorn

  • Heavy Pan with a handle and a lid or a Whirly Pop Popcorn Popper
  • 1 cup organic popcorn never use non-organic popcorn
  • 1/3 cup grape seed oil or coconut oil or a combination
  • ¼ cup earth balance or organic real butter
  • ½ to ¾ tsp fine grind Celtic sea salt

Honey Caramel Sauce

  • 1/4 cup organic unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 2 tbsp organic cream or half and half
  • 1/4 tsp organic vanilla


  • Put oil in pan, turn on heat, put in earth balance or butter.
  • When butter is melted add popcorn and salt.
  • Shake pan or stir whirly pop continuously until it stops popping.
  • Lightly grease a baking sheet with coconut oil or butter.
  • Have a very large mixing bowl or tub ready to mix the concoction in.
  • Combine everything except the vanilla in a heavy sauce pan. Stirring constantly over medium heat, cook until it is about 245-250 degrees Fahrenheit. It will be creamy and caramel-looking.
  • Drizzle the sauce over the popcorn, stirring or mixing with some large greased tongs until well distributed and most of the popcorn is lightly covered.
  • Spread your Healthy Homemade Cracker Jacks out on the baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and cool.
  • Store in a sealed container.
