Day 8 Who Are You In Covenant With?

Covenant-ChartWe will get back to Jacob and Sarah and more understanding of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ as His Bride, but today, and possibly for a few days, let’s talk about you…

Covenant may be a new concept for you; it has not been taught in the church for decades, probably due to abuse of power. However, abuse of power or lack of teaching doesn’t change one fundamental truth; You and I, all humans on the earth, throughout history were created for Covenant and in fact we ARE in Covenant with someone; the question is Who, who is our covenant parter?

Who are you in Covenant with and how do you know?

When you EXCHANGE Identity, Authority, Protection, Provision or Possessions with a person, an employer, a church, an ideology or an organization you are “In Covenant” with them. Being in wrong Covenant relationships can be devastating.

Cult religions are an excellent example of this exchange.  We’ve all seen or heard about individuals getting involved with a cult that demands their members follow a set of rigid rules, hand over their paychecks and live in absolute obedience to a leader or ruling body.  This is the extreme end of a wrong covenant.  The truth is, many of us are in wrong covenant relationships and don’t even realize it.

Why do we enter into Covenant in the first place?

 We Were Created for Covenant

Before Adam breathed his first breath Covenant was in the heart of God and as we are created in His image, it was also ingrained in the heart of man.

Before God made the first Biblical Covenant men made Covenant with each other. The human heart longs for interdependence and security in relationships. However, those earthly Covenants could never compare to God’s ultimate plan for us. God’s desire is for all of mankind to be in Covenant with His Son, Jesus Christ; the perfect Covenant partner.

God knew man would not be able to keep the conditions of a Covenant relationship with Him; that we would tend toward unfaithfulness and selfishness. God so loved the world that he gave his only son to be our Covenant partner and to pay the price for our inability to keep Covenant with God. The New Covenant in Christ was set in place before the foundations of the world.

Jeremiah 31: 3

“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” (NIV)

God chose Jesus Christ to be YOUR Covenant Partner before the earth was created.

  • Long before God made a Covenant with Noah to never flood the earth.
  • Long before God made a Covenant with Abraham to provide “The Seed”, the Savior, Jesus Christ.
  • Long before God gave the Old Covenant, The Law, to the Children of Israel in the desert.

1 Peter 1:18-21

“18 For you know it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.” (NIV)

God used the Old Covenant he made with Abraham and the Children of Israel, the Covenant of The Law (The 10 Commandments), to show us we cannot follow rules and “be good enough”.   God gave us the ability to be His Covenant partner through Jesus death on the cross, “The price of The Bride”.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

There are 5 Covenant Relationships we experience as humans

  • The Mother Covenant
  • The Father Covenant
  • Covenant with God
  • Friendship Covenants
  • Marriage Covenant

Each of these involves another person and an Exchange.  Tomorrow we will look at “The Exchange”.  This is a wonderful time to understand “The Exchange” and see where we may have entered into covenant with the wrong people, organization or ideology.

We will also look at Jesus as the perfect Covenant partner to exchange with and see how our Covenant with Him makes us complete in every way!

Your Covenant God is there for you, even if everyone else, including the church or Christians have broken covenant with you. Even if your parents or your spouse broke covenant – God has not.

Covenant is the Mindset of Honor.
