Juicing FAQ

Juices are Rich in Enzymes and Antioxidants

Can I just take supplements? There are some good antioxidant formulas available, such as AIM Proancyanol 2000, however, supplements alone will not keep you healthy.  As Dr. Rowen Pfeifer, DC says, “only use supplements to supplement a healthy diet and lifestyle”.

 

Can I Buy Bottled Juice Like Bolthouse Carrot Juice?  Bottled juices are pasturized so the enzymes are dead.  These bottled juices contain vitamins and minerals and antioxidants but don’t have the construction crew necessary to put the nutrients to work.  There is no comparison in the results of bottled juices and fresh juice.  Natural Health Clinics world wide use freshly extracted veggie and fruit juices to heal even stage 4 cancer, not bottled juice.  The AIM company dehydrated juices are processed to retain their enzymes and are a good substitute for freshly extracted juice.

 

How Much Should I Drink?

The Amount of Juice You Require Depends On Your Stage of “Health Nut” The amount you need depends your current lifestyle and the condition of your body.

 

Are you Already A Health Nut? If you are avoiding processed foods, refined sugars and chemicals and eating a mostly raw whole foods diet then 16 ounces a day should be sufficient.  You can drink it all at once or drink 8 ounces in the morning and 8 ounces before dinner.  Be sure and wait 20 minutes prior to eating anything after drinking your juice.

 

Are you a Sporadic Health Nut?  This means you eat raw veggies and fruits every day and make an effort to avoid processed foods and sugar as much as possible but you still partake more than you’d like in the Standard American Diet (SAD).  For you, 16 ounces twice a day is a good idea.  Be sure and wait 20 minutes prior to eating anything after drinking your juice.

 

Do you eat the “Standard American Diet” of processed and chemical laden foods?  Follow our slow start plan in Wonderfully Well on pages 55 – 63.  Begin with 8 ounces and work up to 32 ounces a day until your diet and your body, are clean.

 

Are you Sick?  Do you have chronic health conditions or disease?  If you are in this category you definitely need a plan, if you start juicing this much every day and keep eating unhealthy foods and living an unhealthy lifestyle you will temporarily feel very sick because your body will begin a heavy detox.   Our personal coaching programs are extremely effective for people with chronic physical conditions.  We help people create a sustainable system to will slowly cleanse and rebuild the body and  often the body will heal and eliminate chronic disease.

 

Do you have Cancer?  If you have cancer, we recommend you contact the Gerson Institute and do whatever you can to follow their program.  That said, if you are sick, the more juice the better for you.  Health clinics in the US and worldwide who use juicing as part of their healing protocol recommend 32 ounces to 1 gallon of freshly extracted juice per day.  The more juice you drink, the more quickly your body has what it needs to do it’s job of protecting and repairing your cells.

 

Why Does Juicing Work?

When you drink freshly extracted vegetable and fruit juices (not bottled or processed) OR enzyme rich dehydrated juice powders on an empty stomach those antioxidant rich foods are absorbed into your blood stream within 20 minutes and go directly to your cells to cleanse and repair the cell.  The powerful antioxidants in these foods and the cofactors that work with them go to work to destroy invading toxins such as virus and bacteria and cleanse the toxic build up of the cells.

 

In her book, Raw Juices Can Save Your Life, Dr. Sandra Cabot, MD calls freshly extracted raw vegetable and fruit juices “a treasure house of nutritional healing”.  Dr. Cabot further states “juices are unique because they allow the gut to receive a very concentrated amount of phytonutrients (plant nutrients) that could not be obtained by eating a normal amount of raw vegetables and fruit.  You can absorb up to 99% of their value”.

 

Dr. Joel Fuhrman, MD, in his book Eat To Live recommends adults consume two pounds of vegetables per day for optimal health.  That would be 8 carrots, half a box of baby spinach, 2 tomatoes, 1 cucumber and an onion.  That’s a lot of veggies!  It’s not at all hard when you juice, one pound of carrots make eight ounces of juice.  Most people won’t eat a whole pound of carrots.  If you drink 16 ounces of juice per day you’ll get more than two pounds of veggies.

 

 

Juicing Makes New Cells Stronger and Healthier. Your body is continually rebuilding cells.  Every 28 days you have new skin, every 120 days you have new blood cells, every 7 years your organs are new and every 10-15 years even your bones are completely renewed.  How does this happen?  When a cell is ready to die it divides into two cells.  The old one dies, the new one survives (remember high school biology?)   If the old cell is cleansed and fortified before it divides, the new cell is stronger and healthier than the old one, keep juicing and the process is repeated over and over again.  Your cells and thus, your body, become healthier and stronger rather than older and weaker.

I Can’t Afford a Juicer.  The question is do you want to afford it?  I spoke to a women’s group a few years ago.  Prior to the meeting most of the women were outside smoking.  I also noticed most of them had professionally done nails.  When many of them objected to the cost of eating healthy and juicing I asked how much it costs to buy a carton of cigarettes, how about a month of cigarettes?  How much does it cost to get your nails done?  The point is I have people tell me they can’t afford healthy eating or juicing but they go on many vacations a year, they get regular massages, they hire a housekeeper, they get their hair done, go golfing, own a boat or a second home, you get the idea.  You afford what you value.  If you truly value your health you will make it a priority in your time and finances.

 

Maybe you REALLY can’t afford a juicer, there are people in tight circumstances, we understand.  If you really can’t, first of all pray and ask God to give you one, then send out an email to all your friends and ask if any of them have a juicer they would loan you until you can purchase one. I’ve had many people tell me they prayed for a juicer and shortly after received one.    One of my clients mentioned to her bug man that she was looking for a used juicer.  He told her one of his clients had one for sale.  When he told the person with the juicer about my client, who was a breast cancer survivor, they gave her the juicer.  Craig’s list is another good place to find a good quality Champion or Green Star juicer.  Here’s an idea, if you are a person who values juicing, and you know someone who can’t afford it maybe you could give them one.

What Is the Best Juice?  It’s important to get a variety of brightly colored veggies and a few fruits.  Fruit juices cleanse the body and vegetable juices repair the body.  Our introductory juice, in our book Wonderfully Well is an antioxidant juice made up of carrots, apples and lemons.  Once people get used to this juice we encourage them to expand to other veggies, especially greens.  Most people start with some form of carrot juice and expand their horizons.

 

Juicing is somewhat time consuming.  You have to shop for your veggies and fruits, wash them, prep them, juice them, clean up the juicer, it’s not like the drive through at a fast food restaurant.  However, once you get in the swing of it your daily time for 16 ounces is less than 1 minute per ounce, a good juicer, like a Champion or Green Star is a snap to clean up, just wash, rinse and set out to dry.

We Fell Off the Wagon!

But we got back on!

 We had weeks of visits with family from out of town, travel and a huge cross-country move.  While we did try to eat mostly salads when we went out our juicing was not where it should have been and the chemicals in restaurant foods make you want more, they are addicting!  In fact, on our move I got a salad at Denny’s and it actually made me feel sick.
How did we get back on track?  We set a reasonable start date and got our sorry selves back on track!  Our start date was December 26.  We decided to do a 10-day green juice fast (check out the green sidebar in this newsletter for more info on that and the juice recipe below).  The first three days were a little hard, we were still remembering the treats, coffee and ease eating out.  We knew we would feel much better if we stuck with it so we persevered through the withdrawal.
We made sure we had everything we needed to get started BEFORE Christmas so there would be no excuses like “we’ll get our stuff today and start tomorrow”.  We washed our veggies and fruits when we brought them home so they were ready when we needed to juice. We went to bed on December 25 with the intention and time allowed to get up on December 26 and go for it.

Stage One “Be Aware”

There are clinically proven stages all people experience when it comes to positive life-changes such as weight loss, exercise, health improvement, financial discipline, stopping alcohol, nicotine or drugs.

Which stage are you in?

1.  Precontemplation – I Call This “Be Aware”

You’ve been hearing about the effects of food on your health, maybe your doctor has told you to lose weight or eat better, but you’re not quite convinced it would make that big of a difference.
MOVING TO THE NEXT STAGE:  Deciding what you value is the first step to change.  If you value convenience then you probably aren’t ready to change anything yet.

There are three things everyone does when they create change in an area of life.

1.  Determining Your Values
2.  Discerning Truth
3.  Choosing to Experience Something New

Determining Your Values

If you value feeling good then you must change your actions to match your values.  If you value living a long and healthy life then your actions need to reflect that as well.  What do I mean your actions must reflect your values?
Let’s say you value being at your ideal weight, you want to get back to a place where you look good and feel good about yourself.  You are  busy with work and life and you seem to have a consistent diet of donuts for breakfast, pizza for dinner and cookies for a snack. Your actions of eating and food choices do not match the value of being at your ideal weight.  Then you must ask yourself, do I really value being at my ideal weight or do I value the taste and convenience of pizza, donuts and cookies?
Our detox clients have many aha moments regarding their actions vs what they claim are there values.  When people detox their bodies wonderful things happen in other areas as they begin to feel great and redefine what they really value.
Initiate Change
Do a review of your current actions and see how they reflect your values.  Then you can reconnect with your true values and create a plan of action based on where you want to be.

Discerning Truth

Truth is hard to find these days because we live in a capitalist society where advertising in all forms is done to promote sales rather than truth.  We look to original design and long-term results when determining truth.  For example, if someone told you that the tire on your car is really not necessary, it is just there for looks, would you believe them?  What would happen if you did?  The original design of the car, now over a century old, dictates that cars need tires.
The same is true of food.  God created food to provide nourishment and energy so we could have pleasure out of LIFE, not so much out of FOOD.  Man, however, has developed an entire food science industry to create chemicals for manmade foods that actually stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain.  Thus, we trade the pleasure we get from playing outside with family and friends, the pleasure of sex in a truly healthy body, the pleasure of naturally induced energy and naturally induced sleep for pleasure from living LIFE.
Our food philosophy is based on Three Things:
1.  Eat food as close to nature as possible, minimally or non-processed.
2.  Eat foods rich in nutrients.
3.  Eat only small amounts of green-fed and organic animal products, (less than 12 ounces per week).

Initiate Change

Choose one of the three things listed above and work on that this week, see if you experience any positive changes.

Choosing to Experience Something New

Why Am I Stuck?

We’ve been on a health journey for almost 7 years and we’ve experienced all of the following at one or more times:

  • Being in social settings that revolved around unhealthy food.
  • Being in family settings that revolved around unhealthy food.
  • Being too busy and too tired to make healthy food.
  • Smelling Starbucks, a bakery, even McDonalds and just wanting some junk.
  • Being faithful to healthy eating and lifestyle and not feeling like it’s making the changes we were hoping for.
  • Getting off track for an extended period, feeling awful and eventually getting back on track.
  • Being on a tight budget and not able to freely spend money on healthy food.
Any one of those obstacles can make you want to throw in the towel and just live like everybody else.  But then you know in your heart you can’t quit and go back. You feel too awful when you do that and you always remember how great you felt when you were eating well.  Sometimes it’s easy to get back on track and other times it takes awhile, it almost seems like we get stuck!  Why do people get stuck?

He’s going through another stage!

We are enjoying watching our grandsons and daughter as they go through the many stages of growing up; Josiah, 11, is entering the great “Jr. High” stage, we are having fun watching him mature and try to “act grown up” while still being a kid at heart.  Ian just turned 4.  He is in a whole different stage of life, full of fun and new discovery and testing his boundaries.  Our grandsons different stages of life are part of a healthy process of “growing up” to maturity.  You also go through stages when you decide to “grow up” in an area of your life.  Each stage has it’s own process, challenge and benefits.  It’s important to recognize your stage and grow through it so you don’t get “stuck” in a position of immaturity.

Even though we are grown up we continue to go through “stages” in life.  Some of us, due to tragedy, abuse or grief, get stuck in a stage.  Others put great intention to navigating change and moving to the next stage.  Where are you in the journey of life?

6.  Relapse takes you back to “Be Intentional” so you can “Be Confident”

Yep, this is a real part of making a lasting change.  Nobody’s perfect and we all have failures.  The natural thing to do is beat yourself up, consider it an impossible task and go back to your old ways.  Binge on Pizza and Cokes, Eat a bag of cookies or sit in front of the TV and graze on chips, candy and cokes.  First consider yourself fairly normal and then take a step towards change.

I’m returning my Omega juicer and want to buy a Champion

Dear Celeste:

I bought an Omega Juicer (from someone else) about two weeks ago now, the juice is sooooo good……but, to juice fruits is a real pain…….I usually have to stop in the middle of juicing and clean the screen to finish. Leafy greens are fine to juice.

You said the Omega parts were made cheaply, now I see what you meant, so I decided I am going to return the Omega and buy a Champion from you.

I am juice fasting right now, I have about 5 days left.  I juice fast once a month, this is my third juice fast……I fast every time Aunt Flow visits, it helps me to remember to fast,(LOL) it has helped my “visits”.   Aunt Flow and I don’t see eye to eye but this visit has be pretty good.=)

Good for you, juice fasting during your monthly cycle is genius! It’s amazing how the body responds when we give it what it needs.  Freshly extracted veggie and fruit juices during your monthly cycle gives your body an abundance of building supplies to cleanse and repair.

Many of our female clients completely eliminate PMS by avoiding all refined sugar the week prior and the week during their monthly cycle.  Just this one trick will often completely eliminate any difficulty with monthly cycles, hormonal mood swings, and even pre or post menopausal symptoms.  You can still have fruit, however, eliminate all refined sugars and products containing sugar, so yes that even means chocolate.

Sorry about your experience with the Omega, we’ve sold several Champions to people who had the same experience.

The gears and plastic on the green star are well designed, clinicls all over the world use them to heal cancer. The Green Star has been the same for 30 years or so, it is a flawless design. The only thing they recently changed was to update the housing design to make it look more modern. It takes up quite a bit of space and is considerably slower than the champion or the omega; but it does everything, even wheat grass. As far as the gears go, You just have to be careful to line up 3 little dots that are plainly marked on the metal gear end. It’s not hard.

We love our Champion, we’ve both gotten the flu, ugh! and so have been drinking juice every hour for about 2 weeks now, our champion is a champ! We make enoughfor the entire day, since we are both on a recovery plan right now, that is almost a gallon of juice each day.  For each of us we make  4 pints of orange or grapefruit  4 pints of of carrot, celery, apple and greens, remembering this is a recovery plan, we don’t do this all the time, just until we are well.  We alternate the juice each hour with a serving of a dried green or liquid chlorophyl.  Sunshine is also important when you are in recovery, getting out for even a 15 minute walk will speed up your recovery, let the sun hit as much of your skin as possible to get a good dose of Vitamin D.

What Is A Food I Should Eat Every Day?

I am trying to change to a healthier diet, I’ve learned so much from you!  Is there a certain food I should be sure to include in my daily choices?  Anonymous

Thank you for the great question!  

The answer:  Eat at least a half an avocado every day for these wonderful health benefits:

Inflammation is a primary cause of most of our western chronic diseases.  Most of our inflammation is caused by the Standard American Diet (SAD).  People who “Flip” their food to more alkaline choices begin to see a reduction in inflammation and, as a result, a reduction in their chronic medical conditions.  The George Mateljan Foundation, on their website, The Worlds Healthiest Foods, says this about the avocado:  ”The ability of avocado to help prevent unwanted inflammation is absolutely unquestionable in the world of health research. The term “anti-inflammatory” is a term that truly applies to this delicious food.”

In addition to the other benefits, research is showing that one of the most powerful jobs of an avocado is to “turn off” the growth cycle of developing cancer cells and “increase” the growth cycle of healthy cells, this alone is an excellent reason to add avocado to your daily food choices.

Including avocado in your daily food choices can:

  • Reduce or sometimes eliminate joint and muscle pain due to arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout

Please note:  Always eat avocado fresh because the enzymes, the construction crew of the food, die when exposed to oxygen over a short period of time, this is why avocado turns brown so quickly, it is the highest enzyme food.  If you go to a restaurant, only order guacamole if they make it fresh each time, better yet, many restaurants will make it in front of you.  The green dip-dressing type stuff you buy at the store or get in a restaurant is not made with fresh avocado, it’s a mix, full of junk.
  • Fresh Guacamole with veggies or organic corn chips, or drop some on a salad or taco. (My favorite)
  • Mix avocado with pico de gallo or salsa.
  • Cut avocado up in chunks and put it on salads.
  • Slice an avocado and put it on a sandwich or burger (veggie or otherwise).
  • Mix it with fruits such as mango, papaya, pineapple or any brightly colored veggie.

Make a dessert with avocado?  Yep, avocado mixed with many different fruits or even chocolate make a fabulous, smooth, creamy dessert.  Mix it with brightly colored fruit such as cherries or blueberries or mix it with chocolate!
Aren’t they expensive?
I keep my eye open for sales on avocados, I buy some that are green and hard and let them soften up some on the counter, then put them in the crisper drawer.  A good organic avocado will last 2 weeks that way.  Just yesterday Kroger had a sale and I picked up 8 for $10 and saved almost $10, great deal on a super food.
How Do I Store Avocado?
If you only use half the avocado, use the half without the seed, and scoop out the flesh.  Leave the seed in the other half and put the empty shell back on top of the “good half”.  Storing cut avocados this way will help to preserve the avocado that is left; be sure to use it the next day.  Cut avocado tends to brown quickly, a little lemon or lime juice helps it to not brown and look pretty.

Is Raw Cheese Really Raw?

I recently learned that “raw cheese” can be considered “raw” if it is heated just one degree below pasteurization!  Even the Organic Valley raw cheese I’ve bought in the health food section of the grocery store and at the market and showed many of you!  Arrrgggghhh!  Hopefully some of the more “designer”cheeses in the cheese section of WFM are truly raw, I can’t be sure but I can be sure about a new TRULY raw cheese from Beyond Organic, called Greenfed Raw Cheese, coming out in November!

Why Raw Cheese?  First of all it tastes fantastic and you don’t need much to be satisfied.  When Phil & I were not eating well we went through about 5 pounds of cheddar cheese A WEEK!  We were never satisfied by what we ate.  Now we can eat 1 ounce and be satisfied, we get the nutrients, the taste and all the benefits of raw cheese without the huge amounts of fat and calories we used to consume.

Using Raw Milk products in small amounts (this is an ounce or two occasionally), such as Truly Raw Cheese, and completely eliminating all pasteurized milk products, can help eliminate allergies and build immunity through the beneficial bacteria in truly raw cheese.  When the milk used to make the cheese is unpasteurized the living part of the food, the enzymes are still intact.  This allows the body to digest the food and use the nutrients in the food.  It also allows the growth of GOOD bacteria that help with immunity and digestion.  Truly RAW cheese made from unpasteurized milk has wonderful flavor, you don’t need much of it to be satisfied and is like taking a probiotic to populate the colon with beneficial bacteria.  Many people have allergies caused by consuming pasteurized milk products.  When people eliminate all pasteurized milk products from the diet and begin to use raw milk products in small amounts, such as raw cheese, their allergies, ear infections, respiratory problems disappear!

Enzymes are the construction crew of the food.  All food kept at it’s natural temperature or heated no more than 118 degrees contains enzymes, these are the living part of the food.  You can see enzymes at work if you’ve ever used Oxyclean, you know the “scrubbing bubbles”?  The same enzyme action happens in food…the living enzymes are the “construction crew” of the food, they literally digest the food so the body can use it.

You can view enzyme action in a banana or apple on the counter.  If the fruit becomes bruised, it begins to break down and literally consumes itself right there on the counter!  However, if you put applesauce or baked banana on the counter it will attract mold spores that will consume it eventually, the enzymes are killed by the heat used to make the applesauce or banana.  Raw foods are powerful in your body because of these living enzymes.  They literally digest the food, tear it apart so the body can put the vitamins, minerals, proteins, sugars and fats to work.

What does this have to do with milk or cheese?  Unpasteurized milk products also have living enzymes which help to “deconstruct” the food so your body can use it.  Pasteurization kills those living enzymes and creates a product that is foreign to the body, the body actually views it as a toxic invader, it doesn’t know what to do with the unnatural proteins, vitamins, minerals, even calcium!

Raw cheese has the enzymes if it is heated below 118 degrees but milk is pasteurized to at least 145 degrees F and raw cheese milk is heated to 160 degrees!  Refrigerated pasteurized milk is heated to 145 degrees for at least 30 minutes.  Ultra pasteurized cream is heated to 280 degrees.  Pasteurized milk that is kept on the shelf and not refrigerated is heated from 250 to 302  degrees farenheit.  So obviously it is completely dead!

There is a third type of milk treatment, thermalization, which involves heating the milk only to 60-65 °C/140-150 °F for 15 to 30 seconds then chilling before re-heating at the start of cheesemaking. This process reduces the number of micro-organisms, but not so much so that the resulting cheese will be without flavor. The United States FDA considers this still to be raw milk, while the European Union considered it pasteurized.  Beyond Organic Greenfed Raw Cheese is never heated above the temperature of the cow’s body, 101 degrees F.  More info here.

BTW:  Most processed foods are pasteurized, killing the living part of the food.  There are many words for pasteurization, flash, irradiated, high temp, low temp, ultra pasteurized.  Each of these processes allows the manufacturer to keep the food on the shelf for long periods of time, void of the living enzymes, the “construction crew” necessary to break down the food for use in the body.  This is why freshly extracted veggie and fruit juices are the only type of juice you should drink.  Bottled and boxed juices are Flash Pasteurized and are also dead food, basically liquid sugar.

Why am I constipated on a Raw Diet?

Dear Celeste:

I have been on an Elimination diet for over a month. Eating just fresh fruits and veggies – mostly raw; some fish, some chicken, some brown rice; lots of water, green tea, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. Soooo, the problem is constipation.

  1. Why with all this good stuff are we still suffering from constipation?
  2. When are we going to start feeling more energy?
  3. Why are we not seeing any weight loss?

Just curious, thought this was the way to go to determine what were the items that caused problems and have been waiting for our bodies to get on a regular schedule. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Oh there is also exercise at least 3x a week.

Hi Friend,

It’s great to hear from you.  I’m sorry to hear you’ve been feeling badly for so long.  Constipation is not uncommon for people who begin a raw food program.  To avoid long term constipation resulting in more toxicity, we have our personal coaching clients do a series of 2-3 colon hydrotherapy sessions prior to detoxing.

Healthy Bowel Movements  Many people who have “good” bowel movements are actually impacted and don’t know it; there are several reasons why they have regular bowel movements; 1. They drink coffee, which is an irritant to the colon.  2.  Their colon is full and when they “put some in” they “push some out”.  Even though they are eliminating there is no peristaltic action.

When you stop drinking caffeine, and change your food to mostly raw your digestion changes, you don’t have the bulk of food going through to “push” food out and so your bowel movements are smaller, hard to get out and dry.

Another thing to check is this, are your foods rich in natural juice and water or more dry?  For instance, spring mix and spinach are dry whereas romaine lettuce has a lot of natural water.  Make sure you include high water foods in your fruits and veggies.

I would suggest 5 things:

1.  Eat only fruit until you have a bowel movement in the morning; even if it takes until noon or later, eat only fresh, raw, juicy fruit, freshly made fruit or veggie juices or smoothies with fresh or frozen fruit and no dairy products.  You can read more about that in Wonderfully Well, page 59.

2.  Make sure you are getting half you body weight in ounces of water each day and start the day with a glass of warm water with the juice of an entire lemon.

3.  Do a series of at least 3 colon hydrotherapy sessions.  We have a wonderful set of ladies here in Cool Springs at New Beginnings to Health and Wellness, Millie Taylor and Diane Edrington. 615-476-7498.

4.  Make sure you are getting enough good fat; avocados are good and at least 2 Tablespoons of flax oil daily, use in salad dressings or smoothies, it doesn’t store as fat in your body but will lubricate your colon.

5.  Use Aloe Vera daily 2-4 Tablespoons to help your colon cleanse and heal.

One last suggestion is to add probiotics and digestive enzymes to your regular diet.  If you are constipated, adding probiotics can work wonders!  We recommend Garden of Life Primal Defense or Raw Probiotics and Garden of Life Ultra Omegazyme or Raw Enzymes.  Find them here.
